Most audiences overlook the essence of what painters are trying to accomplish when rendering light and shadow in art. Several different scientific and mathematical disciplines are involved in reproducing light's properties and behaviors in a flat space, including modern physics and fundamental geometry. However, the essence of artistic representation in a painting should extend beyond the solidity and firmness of he mere reality. I allow my colors to select alternative conventions for light and shadow in my composition, so that the composition becomes alive and fluid. In this regard, the painting "Sleeping Serene" is an excellent example.
