«The performer»

The performer is a trilogy of oil paintings depicting an elderly woman in the process of styling her long hair. In each composition, there are only three distinct elements: the face, the hands, and the long hair. While connected to one another, the elements float across a uniform black background. As if flowing like a river, the long hair represents the element of conjuncture that preserves the integrity and solidity of the figure. The act of combing hair is a form of artistic performance made available to the spectator: the long hair, like a delicate musical instrument, like a violin, is gracefully played for the audience's enjoyment. The goal is to transport the vibration of this metaphysical melody beyond the two-dimensional perspective of the canvas, so that artistic expression captured in the painting might resonate across space and time.
